Path 3. More solar power in a JCM partner country

Impact

Senegal is a partner country of Japan’s Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM). Under the JCM, Japanese technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions in the partner country and the resulting reductions are shared between the two countries. SUCRECUBE Japon understands that solar power combined with battery storage falls within the scope of this mechanism.

Our third path is to expand solar power in Senegal under this framework.

What is already running

The two solar cold storage sites in Sandiara are not connected to the grid. They run 24 hours a day on solar panels and batteries alone. Cold storage, freezing, processing and the kiosk are powered by the sun during the day and by the batteries at night. Under West African sunshine, these two sites have shown that solar panels and batteries can supply the electricity of an industrial activity.

The memorandum of understanding signed on 25 August 2025 with Senegal’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce covers the deployment of renewable energy and cold storage infrastructure in industrial hubs. The idea is to power the companies in an industrial hub with solar panels and batteries, scaling up the configuration proven in Sandiara.

Where we stand

Discussions on solar power are continuing with the parties concerned. The framework is favourable. But the choice of timing and terms will decide the outcome. Only established facts will be added to this page, in turn.

With Japanese companies

For a Japanese company considering the JCM in Senegal, our local subsidiary takes on installation, operation and maintenance. Permits, site arrangements and local technicians are our part. The equipment comes from the Japanese company. The people who keep it running are on site. The two Sandiara sites were built on this division of roles.

Why this path

No industry grows without electricity. Electricity made from fossil fuels sends foreign currency abroad to pay for fuel. With solar panels and batteries, the fuel costs nothing and the avoided emissions gain value under the mechanism. On this electricity, SUCRECUBE Japon builds cold storage and processing, and then export. That is the order we follow.
