Our Very First Customer Was a Local High School Student.

A refrigerator was installed in the digital KIOSK adjacent to our solar-powered cold storage facility in Sandiara.

We had been cooling beverages as part of a test run when a group of high school students, walking home from school, noticed the new building and peeked inside.

“We’re thirsty, can we get a drink?”

It was 45°C outside. There was no reason to say no. Although the facility had not yet officially opened, one student purchased a Pepsi.

“You are officially our very first customer.”

When we told her, her friends gathered around in celebration. We took a commemorative photo together. After that, chilled water and orange juice kept selling one after another.

A solar-powered cold storage facility, on its own, means nothing to the community if it simply sits there. A cold storage-only service risks becoming an empty shell once the project ends. That is something we have learned through experience.

What we set out to create was a place that holds everyday meaning for residents: a place to pick up daily necessities, grab a cold drink, use printing and copy services, or sit down for a quick meal. A place where faces are familiar and daily life becomes a little easier.

Only when a facility becomes part of the fabric of local life does it truly come alive.

And all of this runs on 100% solar power, completely off-grid. It can be replicated anywhere, even where no power infrastructure exists.

In a sense, we have built a convenience store in Africa.
